We would very much like to thank Ian Moore for sending us this 'Where Are They Now?' contribution on behalf of his father, Bill Moore.
Bill joined Clan Line in 1955 as a junior in the Liverpool office, just prior to the merger with British and Commonwealth. He remembers Anthony Cayzer who was running the Liverpool office for the Cayzer family at the time and recalls having to carry Mr Cayzer ‘s briefcase to his waiting car every evening due to My Cayzer having some kind of disablement.
fter a number of years working in the freight department he was seconded to OCL in 1965, moving to the Bevis Marks office in London following year and working mainly in the Outward Freight Department. He very well remembers many of the Board members from that time including Sir Andrew Crighton, Major-General Prior-Palmer, Kerry St Johnstone and James Harmer.
After nearly 10 years in London which included a move to the Beagle House office in Braham Street he moved in 1974 back to OCL's Liverpool office, located on the 14th floor of Silkhouse Court as a Sales Manager, regularly travelling to the various OCL Regional offices as part of his Sales patch in the north of England.
Bill left OCL around 1986. He continued to work in Sales in the shipping industry until his retirement in 2003. He’s 89 now and his memory is not what it was but speaking to him he was able to recall a fair bit from the early days of OCL (and did throw up a couple of names of other people around the scene that must have made an impression as a young employee, namely a Colin Davies and Charlie Gilchrist). He still enjoys watching football and spending his Maersk pension!
Ian tells us that he has managed to obtain a copy of 'British Box Business: The History of OCL' from Amazon at an eye-watering price of £110! He says he will enjoy reading excerpts to Bill to see if he can provide any other background.
