Eddie Wipperman
Our thanks to David Cross for this tribute to Eddie Wipperman who very sadly passed away 23 January 2025.
We offer our condolences to Eddie's family and friends.
The bulk of Eddie’s time in the company was spent in the Cargo department in the South East region. For many years he ran Chobham Farm /LEICD (London East International Container Depot) facility, a huge cargo shed at Stratford in East London where LCL cargo was packed and unpacked.
Eddie was one of a number of Cargo Superintendents who were brave and provided huge support to the containerisation of many services in the mid seventies. The industrial relations situation in the East End of London and on the London docks was hostile and Eddie and his colleagues stuck to their task with determination and professionalism. When LEICD closed Eddie moved to the Barking site and was promoted to a Load Planner role.
Eddie retired some years ago and when I visited him in hospital last year he was amused that his old office in Stratford (some may recall the unusual wall paper there!), was now underneath one of the largest shopping centres in London - Westfield in Stratford.
An opportunity to remember Eddie has been arranged by his partner Vicki at the Wickford Railway Social Club in Market Avenue in Wickford, SS12 0AD, from 13:00 - 16:00 on Wednesday 5 February 2025. All are welcome.
