Peter will be remembered by many of the SCARA membership and here Julian Bevis recalls Peter's influence when he was starting out as a management trainee.

"I first worked with Peter in the Australian Trade Division just before going out to Australia on my first overseas secondment as a management trainee.  This was autumn 1973 and Peter was working with Bill Gray, John Corbet-Singleton and Guy Farnsworth among others.  Peter was very generous with his time making sure that I understood the complexities of conferences, consortia and pooling.  All the sort of thing that are now strictly prohibited by the competition laws under which shipping lines now operate!  Some years later in the early 1980’s, and shortly after I joined the South African Trade Division working for Jim Hodges, I was lucky enough to visit Southern Africa.  Peter was then working in Johannesburg as the OCL representative for the Transvaal and Central Africa.  He and his wife Flicky were tremendously helpful not only at work but also socially.  I was able to gain a very good appreciation of the business and social climate in that part of Africa at a time when the political situation was a great deal more complex than it is now.  I particularly remember Peter as someone who was very keen to make sure that visitors got the best out of their visits to Africa and that they returned to the UK with a thorough appreciation of the business that OCL ran there.

SCARA Chairman David Cross also worked for Peter in South Africa and echoes these comments.”

We offer our sincere condolences to Peter’s wife Flicky and the family.
