Captain Peter Lester has sent in the following sad news about the recent death of Nick Came:
I know that Nick was not a member of SCARA although he had previously joined the group of ex P&O/OCL members who had lunched annually in Pangbourne.
I have been advised that Nick Came who many will recollect from NZS, P&O, SCNZ and the FIJI Conference days passed away at home in Fleet, Hants pm on Friday 29th March.
Many will remember Nick as one of life's few rare Gentlemen, someone always with ready wit and a smile and someone who, unlike many of his peers, always took the time to explain and mentor those who asked. Nick originally joined NZS as a deck cadet (one of the 'Durham' boys) but unfortunately his eyesight prevented him from attaining his 2nd Mates certificate. Following National Service when he was commissioned into the Gunners he joined P & O 's NZ Trade Division. Subsequently he became the London representative of The Shipping Corporation of NZ and upon SCNZ's take over by ACT(A) and subsequently P&OCL he was appointed head of the Fiji Conference based in London.
A cremation will be held at The Park Crematorium, Guildford Road, Aldershot, Hants GU12 4BP on Thursday 11th April at 3.45. Former colleagues and friends are also welcome afterwards at Potters International Hotel, 1 Fleet Road, Aldershot, Hants GU11 2ET (the old Royal Aldershot Officers Club). Funeral Directors are Messrs A.W.Goddard, Kent Road, Fleet, Hants.
