Since the original SCARA members' email and the notice below about the sad passing of John Davies on 21 April, Hilary has kindly provided this account of his life at sea:
John started at sea school in Gravesend in 1961, with his first voyage on Arcadia in March 1962. He started as a Bell boy, progressing to Bedroom Steward.
In 1969 he joined the container fleet as Steward 1, and then Leading Steward, Leading Cook, and then Catering Officer from 1976 until he was made redundant in 1990.
Ships he worked on included Botany Bay, Jervis Bay, Remuera Bay, Aotea. His favourite was the Falmouth Bay.

SCARA members' email 15/05/2026
Very sadly we have been notified of the recent death of SCARA member John Davies, Second Officer Catering.
Hilary Davies advised that John passed away peacefully on Tuesday 21st April 2026.
John's funeral will take place on Thursday 21st May at 2pm. The service will be available online.
