We have received the very sad news that SCARA member and former colleague, William (Bill) McLaughlin passed away in the early hours of Saturday 8 August.
Bill served as an Electrical Officer with Blue Funnel from 1966 to 1974 before moving to Overseas Containers Limited (Container Fleets) to sail on the 'Bay Boats'.
In 1977 Bill left OCL to join William Badger and Troup Curtis (London) as Ship Repair Manager, based in Tilbury (very much retaining his involvement with the OCL vessels). In 1983 he moved to Manning Marine where he stayed until 2000. He then worked for Macelec until taking retirement in 2005.
Bill was a regular attendee at the SCARA Southampton reunion lunches (and in this photograph is pictured on the right-hand side with his daughter, Victoria, at the 2024 event).
Bill's funeral will be at 2pm on Friday 11 September at:
Stockbridge Road
North Waltham
Basingstoke
RG25 2BA
To help with the numbers, Victoria, Stuart and Vince have asked that anyone wishing to attend contacts them before the day (if you do not have their details then please drop a line to ponlheritage@gmail.com and we will forward on your message).
We would like to express our deepest condolences to Bill's family. We know that he will be very much missed by many, and we will be raising a glass in his memory at the next SCARA reunion in Southampton.
