We are very sorry to have to pass on the sad news of the passing of our former colleague Tony Morriss in New Zealand on Sunday 4 May.
Tony's family have put out the following announcement on Facebook:
Family and Friends of Tony.
Sadly😥 Tony passed away on 04 May 2025.
He spend his last few days with family, saw his 79th birthday 🎂.
After a long time he is now with his beloved ❤️ wife Trudy ❤️. They will now be in the next journey of their story together.
Love You Dad xx
Tony's family, who kindly gave their approval for this announcement on the PONL Heritage website, have also provided the link to the Online Tributes page along with a suggestion that anyone who may wish to make a donation in his memory may wish to support the Te Omanga Hospice (in 2006 Tony started volunteering with this trust which provides quality palliative care services for those living with a terminal or life limiting illness in the Hutt Valley community).
Tony's working career started in 1964. From 1974-82 he was Shipping Manager with Gracefield Wool Brokers Ltd. he then moved to BluePort ACT NZ Ltd as Customer Services Manager.
Tony worked for BluePort Marine for ten years, and then joined P&O Containers as Wellington Branch Customer Services Manager, a role he held from 1992 to early 1994.
From 1994 to 2003 Tony took on a systems role based in Sydney, first as Core Business Support Manager and then as Core Business and Technical Support Manager. It was in that capacity that many of us will have worked with him as he was involved with the global and regional roll-outs of the DRS and then FOCUS systems.
Tony's final role in the company was Terminal Co-ordinator in Wellington. Like many of us, he took the option to retire in 2006 following the Maersk takeover of P&O Nedlloyd.
It is very clear from the responses to the family's post about Tony's passing that he was a very much liked and respected colleague. With the words used including 'a great work colleague', 'a wonderful man', 'kind', 'a true gentleman' and 'a good man', he will evidently be very much missed.
Our thoughts and condolences go to Tony's family and friends.
