We have received the very sad news that Bart van Marissing passed away after a long period of illness on the morning of Wednesday 3 July 2013.

At the time of the P&O Nedlloyd takeover by A.P. Møller-Mærsk Bart was Head of Vessel Operations based in Beagle House, London. He transferred over to Maersk Line in 2006, initially as Director Marine Management in the Western Operations Centre based in London and then from 2007 as Director Project Office, Western Operations Centre based in Rotterdam.

Bart, along with his former P&O Nedlloyd colleague Wouter Rozenveld, did some work with the Rotterdam Maritime Academy (STC). He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of ships and shipping, earning him the nickname “The Professor” from colleagues in the Maersk office in Rotterdam.

Bart’s nautical career commenced in 1975 when he joined Nedlloyd Lines as a Deck Officer. He came ashore in 1986 and held various operational positions with Nedlloyd and then P&O Nedlloyd. These positions included heading the planning team for the Shared Tonnage Centre for the Grand Alliance and vessel scheduling in Rotterdam. The projects that Bart was involved in during this period included hatchless ships.

Bart very much appreciated the support that he received from A.P. Møller-Mærsk and despite the effects of his illness he was pleased to be able to assist until recently with various projects for Maersk Line.

Bart’s interests were shipping, playing the base guitar, enjoying music and culture, travelling around and taking care of his family especially Margreet his wife. He had no children of his own, but considered Margreet’s son to be his own.

'A good and integer guy has passed away'

Bart was known for always treating his colleagues with respect, and that trait was reciprocated. When the news broke on the PONL Facebook page yesterday, so many of his former colleagues responded by posting messages which describe him as ‘a gentleman’ and ‘kind’. It is clear that he will be missed.

Bart’s cremation ceremony will take place on Tuesday July 9 at 2.45 pm in the auditorium of ‘Crematorium Moscowa’, Waterbergseweg 18 in Arnhem. There will then be the opportunity to offer condolences directly after the cremation at ‘Oranjerie Groot Warnsborn’, Bakenbergseweg 277 in Arnhem.
