AJCL on Facebook

It is easy to think that the family tree that led to the formation of P&O Nedlloyd involved just the global names like Nedlloyd Lines and P&O Containers, Overseas Containers Limited and the predecessors of those companies. There was of course a number of subsidiary companies too, many of which were considered in their time THE BIG players for their particular trade routes.

Australia Japan Container Line (AJCL) is one of those niche trade route companies. Formed on 5 December 1968 as a subsidiary of OCL, AJCL provided container shipping services from Australian east coast ports and Japan.

Company veteran Geoff Bolton is on a mission to ensure that AJCL isn't forgotten, and to this end he has dropped us the following note:

Greetings,

I worked with OCAL divisions in Australia (and secondments to Japan, and New

Zealand) from 1967 to 1997. This included time in Tokyo with the Swire group as

system project leader for the start of AJCL and OCL container services; and later

in Sydney as commercial manager for AJCL (- then later national container manager

for Australia).

AJCL was one of "cross trades" managed under OCL, another being CSCS (Crusader

Swire Container Service) operating containerships between Japan and New Zealand.

Last year I created a Facebook entry on AJCL, which may be viewed at:

I've attempted to get more photo-images of AJCL ships from retired OCAL, E&A, P&O staff ... so

far without success, but will add any as/when they may be sent to me.

This is a great initiative and we'd invite everyone who is on Facebook to "Like" Geoff's page. When that's done, dig out some pictures from the old days and submit them to Geoff's page :-)
